Drastic Decrease in Complaints Received by Lokpal, Preliminary Inquires ordered in Just 289 Cases: Report
New Delhi: The performance record of anti-corruption body Lokpal indicates a sharp decline in public engagement, with the number of complaints received by the ombudsman declining significantly over the recent years.
While the number of complaints received by the Lokpal, which started functioning in 2019-2020, stood at 2,469 for the year 2022-23, has fallen to only 233 for the present year till September, reported The Hindu.
Recently, a tender issued by the Lokpal seeking to procure seven BMW cars worth Rs 70 lakh each, had resulted in criticism for the anti-corruption body from activists and the opposition for chasing luxury. The BMW 3 Series Long Wheelbase was launched in India earlier this year. It is the longest car in its segment with the most spacious second seat row.
The Lokpal has the powers to inquire into allegations of corruption against individuals, including the prime minister, ministers in the Union government and government officials. At present, retired Supreme Court judge, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar is the chairperson, Lokpal.
According to The Hindu report, while the Lokpal has received a total of 6,955 complaints till date, 6,264 complaints out of these, which amount to 90% of the total complaints were received in the first four years of its establishment till 2023.
Only 691 complaints have been received in the last three years, reported the newspaper. According to the data available on the Lokpal’s website, it has ordered preliminary inquiries in only 289 cases against all the complaints it has received till date, and prosecution sanctions have been granted in just seven cases.
