New Delhi: The Haryana government suspended mobile internet, SMS services and all dongle mobile internet services except voice calls in Nuh district on Sunday, February 26, two days after protests took place at the Ferozpur Jhirka area with demands for justice for Junaid and Nasir.
The two men were set on fire by a cow vigilante group with connections to local Bajrang Dal leader Monu Manesar, which suspected that they were smuggling cows.
The Haryana home department, issuing the order, claimed that “there is a potential cause for communal tension, obstruction or injury to persons, danger to human life and property, disturbance of public peace and tranquility,” in Nuh.
The order claimed that “concerned authorities” had said there was an “imminent need to curb the spread of misinformation and rumours through various social media platforms.”
The suspension order will be in place till 11.59 pm on February 28, Tuesday.
The order, signed by the additional chief secretary to the Haryana home department, T.V.S.N. Prasad, says that it was issued “to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in the jurisdiction” of Nuh.
The suspension invokes Section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 to be read along with Rule (2) of Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017.
The Haryana police’s role in the investigation into the killings has repeatedly been questioned.
A day ago, The Wire reported on how strings of the Junaid and Nasir murder case have been linked to a white Scorpio car that has been used in the past for abduction and violent activities. The car was also listed in online ownership websites as belonging to the Haryana government.
