New Delhi: Police have found 11 skulls and 56 foetal bones from the premises of a hospital under fire for performing an abortion on a 13-year-old girl.

Indian Express has reported that a day ago, a doctor and two nurses were arrested from the family-run Kadam Hospital, in Arvi city of Wardha district in Maharashtra.

The mother of the pregnant minor girl had filed a police complaint alleging that the hospital had performed an abortion on her daughter. Police said that the girl had been raped by a 17-year-old boy who has been taken to a juvenile home and his parents, arrested.

The boy's parents had threatened the victim's parents that they would defame the girl if she did not undergo an abortion, and they paid for the procedure last week, Hindustan Times has quoted a police official as having said.

A complaint of illegal abortion was lodged, following which the accused were arrested under relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police said.

Hospital authorities did not inform police before performing the abortion, as is the law in such cases.

Police found the additional bones when they dug a part of the hospital for the remains of the foetus.

The maternity hospital has four doctors, Kumar Singh Kadam, his wife Shailja Kadam, son Niraj Kadam and daughter-in-law Rekha Kadam, and 11 nursing staff. Rekha Kadam and two nurses, Pooja Dhat and Sangita Kale, were arrested for the minor's abortion.

Wardha Superintendent of Police Prashant Holkar told PTI that the accused doctor's parents-in-law, who are also physicians , have a license to perform abortions.

A senior police official has told the news outlet that investigations are on to uncover if more abortions were carried out at the hospital.

The hospital has been sealed.
