New Delhi: Family members of three elderly residents of Indore’s Bhagirathpura have alleged that they died owing to the diarrhoea outbreak triggered by contaminated water which has so far resulted in the deaths of more than two dozen people.

The deaths of the three elderly persons happened over the last few days, with Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari claiming that the death toll from the area has now touched 28. Patwari said that 75-year-old local Congress leader Rajaram Bhaurasi being the latest victim, reported New Indian Express.

However, Indore chief medical and health officer (CMHO) Dr Madhav Hassani denied that the three recent deaths happened due diarrhoea or associated complications.

“The reports of Rajaram Bhaurasi, particularly revealed that he was not suffering from diarrhoea (vomiting and upset stomach), but was instead an old cardiac and diabetes patient,” said the Indore CMHO an official statement released on Sunday (January 25).

Apart from Bhaurasi, two other elderly residents of the locality including 82-year-old Vidya Bai and 63-year-old Badri Prasad died on Thursday (January 22) and Friday (January 23) respectively. While Vidya Bai’s kin alleged that she had been down with acute diarrhoea and associated health problems, 63-year-old Badri Prasad died at the same private hospital where the former had breathed her last.

The Congress slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Madhya Pradesh over the incident.

“The negligence, corruption and arrogance of the BJP government have poisoned the water, claiming the lives of 28 innocent people so far,” state Congress president Patwari posted on X.

An audit report prepared by a committee of the government-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College showed that the deaths of at least 15 could be linked to the outbreak in some manner. Residents of Bhagirathpura have claimed that more than two dozen persons have died so far of the vomiting and diarrhoea outbreak due to contaminated drinking water.
