New Delhi: The Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government on Monday (July 8) won the vote of confidence in the state Assembly, even as opposition members staged a walkout.
Forty-five members including one nominated member voted in favour of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government led by Soren, reported the Press Trust of India.
After his release from jail, Soren had once again taken oath as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand last week after former CM Champai Soren had stepped down.
Members of the opposition BJP along with the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) party had staged a walkout during the trust vote. While the BJP has 24 MLAs in the Assembly, the AJSU has three legislators.
The ruling alliance in Jharkhand comprises the JMM (27 MLAS), the Congress (17 MLAs) and the RJD (1 MLA). Soren had taken oath on July 4, a day after Champai Soren stepped down.
This is the third time Soren has taken charge as Jharkhand CM. The first was in 2014 after a period of political uncertainty in the state, and the second was after assembly elections in 2019, which his Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party won in alliance with the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
Soren had resigned just before his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 this year. He feared the Union government may impose President’s Rule in Jharkhand if he was arrested while in office on the pretext of the failure of the state’s constitutional machinery.
