New Delhi: Three persons were arrested on June 11, Saturday in Karnataka's Belagavi for hanging an effigy of suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

According to images shared by a journalist on Twitter, the effigy was found hanging on cable wires on Fort Road in Belagavi on June 10, Friday.

The accused were identified as Mahmad Soheb, Aman Mokashi, Arbaj Mokash, reported the Siasat Daily.

BJP leader Nupur Sharma was suspended as the party spokesperson on June 5 after several Gulf countries condemned her allegedly offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad during a news debate on Times Now. The comments were made on May 26 during a discussion on the ongoing Gyanvapi mosque row.

Sharma's views were echoed by Naveen Jindal, then the party’s media head in Delhi, on Twitter on June 1. The BJP expelled Jindal for his derogatory remarks on the religious figure.

Meanwhile, protests occurred across the country against the BJP leaders’ comments on Prophet Muhammad, followed by subsequent arrests.

On June 3, violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur after a group of protesters forced the closure of shops – a call that the shopkeepers refused. This led to a scuffle between the protesters and the shopkeepers. A day after the incident, the police registered three first information reports (FIRs) against more than 1,000 unknown persons, out of which 55 people were named as accused, all of whom were Muslims.

Two teenagers were allegedly killed and more than 20 people were injured on June 10 as violent protests against the BJP leaders' comments rocked Ranchi. Amid stone-pelting, the police had allegedly opened fire at protestors.

Trains were vandalised in West Bengal as protests spread from Howrah district to the northern Nadia and Murshidabad districts on June 12, Sunday. As many as 100 people have been arrested.

Over 60 people were arrested amid a crackdown on protestors in Prayagraj (Allahabad) in connection with the violence on June 10. Javed Mohammad, a prominent face in the anti-CAA protests, was named as a key conspirator by the Uttar Pradesh police alongside 10 others over this incident. His house was completely demolished on the evening of June 12, Sunday, with just a day's notice from the authorities, The Wire reported.
