New Delhi: The Kerala Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution, asking the Centre to rename the state ‘Keralam’.
The resolution was moved by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, reported The Indian Express.
“The name of our state in Malayalam is Keralam… However, the name of our state in the first Schedule of the Constitution has been written as Kerala. This Assembly is unanimously requesting the Union Government to take immediate steps under Article 3 of the Constitution to change the name of the state to Keralam,” states the resolution.
A similar resolution was also passed in August last year with the CM saying that the resolution was needed to be reintroduced due to some technical issues.
The previous resolution sought amendments to the First Schedule of the Constitution (list of various states). It had also sought an amendment to the Eighth Schedule (list of official languages).
CM Vijayan told the Assembly that on further examination, it was realised that the wording did not include the latter demand, which led to the resolution being modified and reintroduced, reported The Indian Express.
While the state is called Keralam in Malayalam, its English word is Kerala. The state of Kerala had come into existence from November 1, 1956.
The resolution moved in by CM Vijayan on Monday was accepted by both the LDF and UDF members in the Assembly.
