New Delhi: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced extension of the ongoing lockdown in the national capital by another week, amid a rising number of COVID-19 cases and a continued delay in supply of oxygen to the city hospitals.

"Lockdown in Delhi is being extended by one week," Kejriwal said in a tweet.

The ongoing lockdown that was scheduled to conclude at 5 am on May 3, now stands extended for another week.

According to Union health ministry, India reported 401,993 daily cases on Saturday morning – becoming the first country in the world to record more than four lakh new coronavirus cases. The death toll rose by 3,523.

Meanwhile, several states, including Delhi, have said there will be a delay in flagging the vaccination programme on Saturday (May 1) due to the delay in procurement of vaccines in the country, leading to shortage.

The chief minister said around three lakh doses of Covishield are expected by May 3, when the drive for vaccinating people above 18 years will commence.
