New Delhi: A convoy of Manipur police was allegedly attacked by a mob in the state’s Chandel district on Wednesday (October 1) night.
“A convoy of the Manipur Police came under attack by a mob at Longja village in Chandel district,” officials said on Thursday (October 2), reported Press Trust of India.
As a result of the attack, the windshields of some of the police vehicles sustained damages. One of these vehicles belonged to the additional superintendent of Chandel district.
“Kuki women stood before the convoy and prevented the vehicles from advancing,” said the officials. Several Kuki organisations suspect that the police are biased towards the Meitei community.
According to the Nagaland Post, the police team had gone to the Longia village to conduct a search operation after getting inputs regarding movement of illegal drugs and weapons in the area.
As the police personnel were outnumbered, central security forces, including the Assam Rifles from nearby security posts, rushed to the area to prevent the crowd from causing harm to the police officers and personnel.
Meanwhile, the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), accused the Chandel district police of raiding a house of one of the group’s officers on Wednesday night.
The group issued a statement saying that the raid against the officers and cadres of the organisation who signed the tripartite suspension of operation (SoO) agreement as a total violation of SoO ground rules.
At least 260 people have been killed and thousands homeless in clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur since May 2023.
