Manmohan Singh Cremated at New Delhi With Full State Honours

New Delhi: Former prime minister Manmohan Singh was cremated today, December 28, at the national capital, with full state honours.

Singh passed away late on December 26.

His last rites were conducted at Delhi’s Nighambodh Ghat crematorium. Congress leaders, party members and supporters walked in a rally with his body to from the party headquarters to the crematorium. Reports said that slogans of 'Jab tak suraj chand rahega, tab tak tera naam rahega (for as long as the sun and moon are there, your name will be chanted)' were heard.

At the crematorium were government representatives including prime minister and Singh's successor, Narendra Modi, and Union home minister Amit Shah, along with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress veteran Sonia Gandhi and others.

Palestine's ambassador in India, Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, was also present at the funeral and left a wreath from Palestine prime minister Mahmoud Abbas.

The king of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and the foreign minister of Mauritius were also at the funeral, sources have said.

In Bhutan, a special prayer ceremony was held at the Kuenrey of Tashichhodzong, where the fourth king and the queen mothers offered one thousand butterlamps in Singh's memory.

Bhutan is among south Asian countries which have announced periods of national mourning. The prime minister's office at Mauritius has also announced that national flags across the country will be flown at half mast. The same is being done at Singapore.

India has announced a seven-day national mourning period. The national flag will be flown at half-mast across India. The Union home ministry has also allocated space for a memorial for Singh.
