Modi Government Announces MGNREGA Will Be Repealed on July 1

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government has notified the date on which the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act of 2005 – the world's largest rural employment guarantee legislation – will be repealed.

Late last year, the government had announced the replacement of the successful UPA-era 100-day job guarantee with the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin Bill (VB–G RAM G Bill). It was pushed through parliament during the Winter Session last year, amidst furious criticism of the move, concerns over federalism and protests.

As per Sub Sec 1 of Section 37 of the VB – G RAM G Act, the Union government had to notify a date on which the MGNREGA would be repealed.

In exercise of the said power, the government has announced that MGNREGA will come to end on July 1, 2026, a notification signed by the joint secretary of the rural development department of the eponymous ministry notes.

“All assets, liabilities, records, funds and obligations arising under, or relating to, the repealed Act shall stand transferred to and vest in the authorities constituted under this Act and shall be dealt with in such manner as may be prescribed by the Central Government," reads Sub Sec (5) of Sec 37 of the VB–G RAM G Act.

All the assets, liabilities and records of MGNREGA will thus be transferred to the VB–G RAM G.

The VB–G RAM G will come into force from the same date, July 1. “Ongoing works under Mahatma Gandhi NREGA as on the date of commencement may continue as per the provisions of the VB–G RAM G Act. These works shall be seamlessly migrated and prioritised for completion, ensuring that public assets are not left incomplete and community benefits continue," a government source told Wire.
