On Govt's Recommendation, Nepal President Suspends Parliament Session, Opposition Calls Move 'Unprecedented'
New Delhi: Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel on Thursday (April 23) suspended the session of both houses of Parliament that was scheduled for April 30, citing “special reasons.”
The country’s opposition has termed the move “unprecedented and surprising,” reported Press Trust of India. Ritesh Kumar Shakya, spokesperson of the Office of the President said that the session of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly was suspended on the recommendation of the Nepal government and the Council of Ministers.
However, no further details were disclosed regarding the reasons behind the suspension.
Earlier, Paudel had called the parliamentary session for April 30 on the recommendation of the cabinet on April 21.
Opposition Nepali Congress leader and seniormost parliament member Arjun Narsingh K.C. said that the government’s decision to suspend the Parliament session even without convening was “unprecedented and surprising.”
The session was suspended a day after Nepal home minister Sudan Gurung tendered his resignation over allegations pertaining to his financial conduct while in the office.
Earlier on April 9, Nepal prime minister Balendra Shah had sacked minister for labour, employment and social security Dip Kumar Sah from his post on the recommendation of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), reported PTI.
The session that was suspended was supposed to be the second parliamentary session after the joint session from April 2 to 10.
