New Delhi: Only two cases filed under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, (UAPA) were quashed by courts between 2018-2022, the Union home ministry on Wednesday (July 30) told the parliament.

Minister of state for home affairs, Nityanand Rai, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha said that 6,503 individuals were charge-sheeted under the UAPA between this period, of whom 252 were convicted. The data presented by the minister is from the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on "Crime in India”.

The two cases that were quashed date back to 2022 and were dismissed by Kerala courts.

According to the NCRB’s data a total of 8,947 individuals were arrested under the UAPA between 2018-2022, with 2,633 arrests in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by 2,162 in Uttar Pradesh, news agency PTI reported.

The year-wise breakup showed 1,421 arrests under the anti-terror law in 2018, 1,948 in 2019, 1,321 in 2020, 1,621 in 2021 and 2,636 in 2022.
