New Delhi: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that she will reshuffle her cabinet by the evening of August 3.

Banerjee’s announcement comes days after Trinamool Congress heavyweight and cabinet minister Partha Chatterjee was relieved of duties and suspended from TMC on July 28, after the Enforcement Directorate seized over Rs 50 crore in cash and gold from apartments associated with him in connection with the probe into the teacher recruitment scam.

Chatterjee, along with his close aide, Arpita Mukherjee, were arrested by the ED.

The TMC government in the state has been under fire from opposition over corruption of leaders.

Banerjee had called a cabinet meeting today after which she announced that the vacant departments, currently being looked after by her, will be assigned to others, local media has reported. The reshuffle was widely speculated to take place today. However, Banerjee announced that a new cabinet would be in place by the evening of Wednesday.

She said the reshuffle will be a “small” one.

The TMC chief also said that some ministers will be relieved of ministry responsibilities and given party functions to execute.

Aside from Chatterjee’s exit – he held the portfolios for parliamentary affairs, industry and commerce, information technology and industrial reconstructions – two ministers, Subrata Mukherjee and Sadhan Pande, have passed away since the cabinet was created in May 2021.
