New Delhi: A total of 65.9% of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) have been completed and delivered to beneficiaries since the scheme’s inception in 2015 until December 4.

The flagship scheme of the Narendra Modi government seeks to provide housing for all to the urban poor.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Monday, minister of state in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore said that PMAY-U is a “demand-driven scheme and Government of India has not fixed any target for construction of houses.”

The scheme has been implemented under the “Housing for All” Mission since June 2015 to provide Central assistance to implementing agencies through states and Union Territories (UTs) for providing all-weather pucca houses with basic civic services to all eligible urban beneficiaries.

“PMAY-U is a demand driven scheme and Government of India has not fixed any target for construction of houses. Based on the project proposals submitted by States/ UTs, as on 04.12.2023, 118.63 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U, out of which 113.43 lakh have been grounded for construction; of which 78.27 lakh have been completed/ delivered to beneficiaries,” Kishore said.

Kishore said that the timeline for completion of projects varies from state to state and generally takes around 12 to 36 months. The scheme period which had earlier set a deadline of March 2022 has been extended up to December 2024.

He also provided figures for the houses sanctioned under the scheme in the last three years.

In 2020-21 a total of 16,81,038 houses were sanctioned, 18,14,606 in 2021-22 and 10,01,739 in 2022-23.
