Jalandhar: Punjab, the border state of the country, was put on high alert after Pakistan’s drone and missile strikes left three people of a family grievously injured in the border district of Ferozepur and injured a migrant labourer in Jalandhar district.

Pakistan has been continuously attacking the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan since India launched Operation Sindoor in the wee hours of May 7, 2025. The operation was launched to avenge the Pahalgam attack which left 26 tourists dead in the valley.

While the drone attack in Khai Pheme Ki village in Ferozepur took place at around 8.30 pm on May 9, the one in Kangniwal village in Jalandhar district took place in the wee hours of May 10.

A purported missile attack also took place in Sahni village in Kapurthala district between 1.30 and 2 am today, May 10. A pit of eight to nine feet was created in the field where its wreckage fell. The blast was so loud that it was heard by the locals who were 10 to 15 kilometres away.

Similar reports of drones and missile wreckage were also reported from Pathankot, Amritsar, Bathinda, and Tarn Taran districts. Locals also recorded videos of what appear to be drones flying in the sky close to the Unchi Bassi Ammunition Depot in Hoshiarpur district.

A complete blackout was announced by respective district administrations in the state on May 9.

Family suffers burn injuries

In Ferozepur district, three members of a family from Khai Pheme Ki village – Lakhwinder Singh, his wife Sukhwinder Kaur and son Jaswant Singh – sustained severe burn injuries, when a drone-like object fell on them. Multiple videos of the blast that led to burn injuries to the family members and damage to their car and house have been shared multiple times on social media.

The incident took place at around 8.30 pm on May 9, when Sukhwinder Kaur was preparing dinner while the father-son duo was out in the open area of their house. “Lakhwinder Singh and his family did not come to know when the drone fell on them and within seconds it led to a huge fire. The villagers rushed to their house and threw water on them to save them from further damage,” said an eye witness.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ferozepur Bhupinder Singh Sidhu told The Wire that he suspected that it was either a projectile or a drone which fell on Lakhwinder Singh’s family. Army officials are probing the incident.

“We immediately rushed all three of them to the Military Hospital, Ferozepur Cantonment. However, Lakhwinder’s wife, who sustained severe burn injuries has been referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, for better treatment,” he said.

'We thought a bomb had fallen'

At Kangniwal village in Jalandhar district which is situated around 25 minutes away from the strategically located Adampur Air Base, a loud blast, possibly of a missile wreckage, was heard. The blast left a migrant labourer injured while its wreckage fell in a lane in the village, causing damage to over 15 houses, breaking their window panes, damaging doors, floors and walls, and cracking the water tanks of six or seven houses.

Avtar Singh (name changed), a resident of Kangniwal village told The Wire that the impact of the blast was so huge that people initially thought that a bomb fell on the village.

“Nearly everybody in the village was awake because of the continuous sirens that were being sounded by the administration. Suddenly at around 1.30 am, we heard a huge blast and people rushed out of their houses in panic. It was only when the police, Army and the Indian Air Force officials reached us that we came to know that it was a missile,” he said.

He said that the labourer who was out in the open at the time of the impact sustained splinter injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. “We heard around 18 to 19 blasts throughout the night,” he said.

Talking to The Wire, SSP Rural Jalandhar H.S. Virk said, “It was a missile debris which fell in Kangniwal village during which a migrant labourer was injured. A house was damaged too while the blast noise was heard over a radius of 10 to 15 kilometres. The missile was foiled by the Air Defence System,” he said.

'Deep pit created'

At Sahni village in Kapurthala district, a huge blast was heard between 1.30 and 2 am. The missile wreckage fell between Khalian and Sahni villages, creating a pit of around eight to nine feet in the fields. While the blast led to panic in the nearby villages, it was only in the morning that the villagers came to know about its impact.

Refusing to reveal any details, SSP Rural Kapurthala Gaurav Toora told The Wire that the incident was under investigation. A team of Army and IAF officials have taken the wreckage in their possession, the villagers shared.

A complete shutdown of markets was announced by administration in most of the border districts including at Amritsar, Pathankot, Jalandhar, and the Adampur Air Base on May 10. Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur districts are also under the shutdown.

The Army has also issued an advisory cautioning people to stay away from any kind of drone or missile wreckage in the region and report such incidents to the local police. Many videos of villagers holding wreckage in their hands and clicking photographs with missiles have come to police's notice.
