New Delhi: Prime minister Narendra Modi, leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi and home minister Amit Shah met on Wednesday (December 10) to finalise important appointments in the Central Information Commission (CIC). In the meeting chaired by Modi which lasted for more than one and half hours, Gandhi is said to have given a dissent note on some of the names which were suggested by the government, reported The Hindu.

The appointments to be done include the next chief information commissioner (CIC) along with eight information commissioners. The names for the vacant posts of Vigilance Commissioners in the Central Vigilance Commission were also discussed in the meeting, reported The Hindu.

Recently in the Lok Sabha debate about electoral reforms, Gandhi had raised questions about the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners.

Gandhi had posed three questions and asked why the Modi government had changed laws to “choose” the chief election commissioner, and grant “gift of immunity” through which no action can be taken against him for any action taken in office.

“Why is the PM and HM so keen to choose who will be the election commissioner? No PM has done this in the history of India. In December 2023 this government changed the law to make sure no election commissioner could be punished for any action that they take in office. Why would the PM and HM give this gift of immunity to the election commissioner that no PM has ever been given before?” Gandhi had said in the Lok Sabha on December 9.
