Rahul Gandhi to 'Adopt' 22 Children From Poonch Who Lost Parents to Pak Shelling

New Delhi: Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi will be “adopting” nearly two dozen children who lost their parents during the conflict between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack in April this year followed by Operation Sindoor in May.

According to Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hamid Karra, Gandhi will bear the educational expenses of 22 such children in Poonch. These children either lost both their parents or the family’s sole bread-winner in Pakistani shelling, reported Indian Express.

“The assistance will continue till these children graduate,” said Karra, adding that the first instalment of the aid would be released on Wednesday (July 30) to enable the children to continue their studies.

During his visit to Poonch in may this year, Gandhi had asked local party leaders to compile a list of affected children.

Thereafter, a survey was conducted in which the names of the children were finalised.

“It’s a huge tragedy,” Gandhi had said in May after winding up his visit to the worst affected border district of J&K, “Many people have lost their lives and properties. Civilians were directly targeted. People have asked me to raise two to three issues at the national level, so I will do it,” he had said.
