New Delhi: The daughter of a Rajya Sabha legislator has got bail after allegedly running over a man sleeping on a Chennai pavement.

NDTV has reported that YSR Congress Party Rajya Sabha MP Beeda Masthan Rao’s daughter Madhuri was driving a BMW car. On the night of June 17, she ran over a 24-year-old painter, Surya, who was asleep on a Besant Nagar pavement. Surya had allegedly been in an inebriated state.

While Madhuri fled the spot, her friend remained there for a while and then left. Surya was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

His relatives arrived at the J-5 Shastri Nagar Police Station, demanding action. Police arrested Madhuri after checking CCTV footage and determining that the car belonged to Beeda Masthan Rao. A report has it that a case was filed under Section 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code – for causing death by negligence – after Surya’s wife lodged a complaint.

Madhuri was granted bail in the police station itself.

Rao has been MLA for Kavali constituency in Andhra Pradesh and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2022. He heads the BMR Group that claims to provide “end to end solution to shrimp farmers.”

In late May this year, a minor and a young man were killed and one other injured after a car in the convoy of sexual harassment accused BJP lawmaker Brij Bhushan Singh’s son, Karan, hit a motorcycle in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district.

In 2021, eight people were killed after a car in the convoy of former BJP minister Ajay ‘Teni’ Mishra’s son, Ashish, rammed into protesting farmers and violence ensued in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri.
