Kolkata: Ten days since a gangraped and murdered trainee doctor was found at her workplace, Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Bengal remains on the boil, with protests at pivotal points in the city raging against the Mamata Banerjee administration.

The Kolkata police has, meanwhile, been working hard to quell what it has labelled misinformation on the case.

Student held

Police has arrested a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student for a social media post that, according to reports, said that CM Banerjee should be shot.

The arrested Kirti Sharma operated the handle “kirtisocial” on Instagram. Trinamool Congress leaders drew the attention of police to the purported fact that she was of encouraging others to assassinate the chief minister.

The police, according to NDTV, also alleged that the accused disclosed the identity and photograph of the victim.

TMC MP moves court

In unprecedented scenes, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has moved the Calcutta high court challenging a notice sent to him by the police, PTI has reported.

In the post, Roy had asked the CBI to undertake “custodial interrogation” of the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Vineet Goyal, and the previous principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh.

CBI officers have allegedly questioned Ghosh for two consecutive days.

Roy allegedly got the notice a day ago on August 18. The court will hear him tomorrow, August 18.

Political leaders, doctors summoned

The Kolkata Police has summoned BJP leader Locket Chatterjee, several Left leaders, including Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI)’s Bengal secretary Minakshi Mukherjee, and six other state-level student leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

While Chatterjee had, according to reports, been asked to appear in connection with the alleged spread of misinformation surrounding the rape and murder, the Left leaders were summoned in the case of vandalism at R.G. Kar on the intervening night of August 14-15.

Two doctors who have spoken on news channels about the medical aspects of the case, and how evidence points to gangrape – Kunal Sarkar and Subarno Goswami – were also summoned.
