New Delhi: A new survey about the the Indian government’s Tour of Duty or Agniveer scheme which offers short-term service in the Indian Armed forces has found that 72% of the participants experienced job stress. Previously, the Agniveer scheme has been widely criticised by the opposition and also by many among the youth.

The survey, conducted by MS University’s Faculty of Social Work student Manish Jangid, under the guidance of Dr Sharmishtha Solanki, surveyed 50 Agniveers selected from across India, reported Gujarat Samachar. The study reveals that 72% of Agniveers who were surveyed experienced job stress, while 52% were anxious about employment opportunities after completing their four-year service tenure.

As per the tour of duty scheme, candidates serve in the armed forces for four years. Following this, only 25% are selected for permanent service, while the remaining Agniveers are discharged.

A majority of the participants also said that they experienced some level of job stress, with 48% described it as moderate, 26% as high while 12% said they didn’t experience stress. One of the points that stood out in the findings of the survey was that 72% of participants believed the limited four-year tenure negatively affected their job satisfaction.

Around 46% of the participants also said that they were worried about post-service job opportunities, 8% expressed strong concern, while 34% were optimistic about finding jobs after the completion of their tenure, reported Gujarat Samachar.

The Agniveer scheme was launched in June 2022 to recruit 'below the officer's rank' cadres of the three services for a period of four years. It saw massive protests across the country.

Earlier, Congress had accused the Narendra Modi government of having brought the Agniveer scheme in order to spend the defence budget for the benefit of a big business house.
