New Delhi: Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal said she was molested by a man who then dragged her about 15 metres after her hand was caught in his car window.

In a tweet in Hindi, Maliwal said, “Last night, I was inspecting the situation of women’s security in Delhi. A car driver, in an inebriated state, molested me and when I caught hold of him, he locked my hand in the car window and dragged me. God saved my life…If the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission is not safe in Delhi, then imagine the situation.”

According to the Indian Express, Harish Chandra (47), a resident of Sangam Vihar was arrested on charges of molestation and voluntarily causing hurt. The newspaper said that the police control room received a call around 3:11 am about the incident, which occurred on the road opposite AIIMS Delhi.

Chandan Chowdhary, DCP (South) told Indian Express that according to Maliwal, the man stopped near her and "asked her to sit inside…with a bad intention". He left but came back again and asked her to sit in his car again. "She again refused and went near his side to reprimand him. The car driver quickly rolled up the window and her hand got stuck… She was dragged for 10-15 metres,” the police officer said.

A first information report (FIR) was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including voluntarily causing hurt and criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, in a tweet in Hindi, said that "the morale of the goons has increased so much that even the women's commission chairman is not safe".
