New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh Police has lodged a first information report (FIR) against former state director general of police (DGP) Jagmohan Yadav for allegedly assaulting and threatening a block-level office bearer of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jaunpur district.
Yadav retired in 2015. He served as the DGP under the previous Samajwadi Party government under chief minister Akhilesh Yadav from July 2015 to December 2015.
A case was lodged against Yadav at Mungra Badshahpur police station on the complaint of Chandresh Kumar Gupta, a village headman and BJP’s local mandal adhyaksh. Yadav, a 1983-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was booked under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Circle officer Machhlishahr, Atar Singh, said as per the complaint the incident took place when officials of the revenue team and chakbandi department had gathered in the secretariat of the gram sabha Tarahati on Monday afternoon to settle land disputes and grievances.
Tarahati is Yadav’s native village where his mother served as a former gram pradhan for several years.
On Monday, September 11, when local villagers led by headman Gupta were raising their grievances with revenue officials in the presence of a tehsildar, lekhpal, local SHO, and others, Yadav barged into the hall, alleged Gupta.
He said when he saw Yadav he got up from his chair as a mark of respect but Yadav insulted him and asked him to leave the hall after knowing his identity.
“He got all fired up, grabbed my collar and struck me twice, and asked me to leave the panchayat bhavan,” alleged Gupta in his police complaint.
Talking to The Wire, Gupta accused Yadav and his family of illegally grabbing village land, including the land of the gram sabha, land of a local girls’ school and barren patches.
“He had illegally grabbed a lot of land in the village and the villagers were in the panchayat bhavan to raise their complaints when Yadav showed up,” said Gupta.
Asked if he had any personal enmity or dispute with Yadav, Gupta said, “I had only met him once before this, when his brother had expired.”
Circle officer Singh said the matter was being probed. The story will be updated with Yadav’s version.
