New Delhi: Vinai Kumar Saxena has been appointed as the new lieutenant governor of Delhi days after Anil Baijal resigned from the post citing “personal reasons”.

Saxena until recently served as the chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission.

Ratifying his appointment, Rashtrapathi Bhavan in a statement said, “The President of India has been pleased to appoint Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena to be the Lt. Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

The statement also said the President accepted the resignation of Anil Baijal, who served as the LG of Delhi until recently. Baijal (76), who had served as LG since December 2016, assumed office after the abrupt resignation of his predecessor Najeeb Jung.

The tenure of Baijal was punctuated by his frequent run-ins with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. In 2018, it was its peak when chief Arvind Kejriwal and his council of ministers carried out a protest demonstration outside Baijal’s official residence, alleging that Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers posted in Delhi were not working as per the instructions of the elected government.

Both the AAP government and Baijal were at loggerheads as regards the implementation of the doorstep delivery of services and ration schemes too, which the Delhi high court recently ruled against.
