In outspoken and hard-hitting criticism of the Chief Justice of India, historian Ramachandra Guha has said the Chief Justice inviting the Prime Minister to his residence for Ganpati puja was “absolutely unforgivable”. Guha said this has “undermined the integrity of the Supreme Court … and also diminished him and his office.”

Guha was particularly critical of the fact that the CJI permitted cameramen and photographers to record the Prime Minister’s presence at the puja and disseminate it widely. He said: “allowing such flagrant display of his closeness to the PM was shocking”.

Guha said this will be “forever a stain on his (CJI’s) personal reputation.”
