Watch | COVID-19 Deaths Ten Times More Than India’s Figures: WHO

This would make India the country with the highest number of pandemic deaths in the world by far – with around a quarter of the global total.

A World Health Organization (WHO) report released on May 5 said that 4.7 million people died of COVID-19 in India between May and June 2021 – nearly ten times the official toll. This would make India the country with the highest number of pandemic deaths in the world by far – with around a quarter of the global total.

The Indian government, however, puts its death toll for the January 2020-December 2021 period far lower: about 480,000.

In a statement issued after the numbers were published, the Indian government said WHO had released the report “without adequately addressing India’s concerns” over what it called “questionable” methods.
