On August 1, a nine-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped, murdered and forcibly cremated in Delhi. The parents of the victim say that the girl had gone to the nearby crematorium to fetch some water when the crime took place.

The Wire spoke to the victim's family and other activists and lawyers who are demanding justice for the victim. The Wire also spoke to the deputy commissioner of police (Southeast Delhi), Ingit Pratap Singh.

The accused, a priest and three employees of a crematorium, have been held under sections 376 D (rape), 302 (murder), 342, 201, 34 IPC, few sections of the POCSO Act, 3 SC/ST, 506 (criminal intimidation) and 204 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
