A position paper drafted by a group of experts to provide the Karnataka governmen's recommendations for the National Education Policy 2020, says that meat and eggs be removed from mid-day meals.

The paper, recently placed in the public domain, says eggs, flavoured milk and biscuits should be forbidden "to prevent obesity and hormonal imbalance caused by excess calory and fat".

It adds, "Lifestyle disorders like diabetes, early menarche, primary infertility in India are escalating, and studies conducted across the countries suggest that animal-based foods interfere with hormonal functions in humans."

The Wire's Sumedha Pal spoke to public health expert Dr Sylvia Karpagam and scientist Megha for their opinion on the recommendations. They criticised the suggestions, saying they are unscientific and baseless. Watch the video for more details.
