At around 1:06 pm on May 12, 2024, The Wire was at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, was speaking to people to get a sense of the election and the issues involved. Two policemen can be seen coming up to senior editor Arfa Khanum Sherwani and the Srinagar resident speaking to her, and ensuring that the recording is stopped. The Wire has reported on candidates and supporters being threatened and stopped from campaigning, some political workers have also said they have been detained for several hours. This is an instance of how now even routine journalistic work in the UT's capital is being obstructed. This is the first election in the erstwhile state after Article 370 was read down in 2019.
