Congress-backed independent MLA from Vadgam in Gujarat Jignesh Mevani on Monday hit out at the BJP, two days after he was released from jail in Assam. He said cases were registered against him to "finish and defame" him ahead of the assembly elections in Gujarat, and that it was part of a "pre-planned conspiracy".

Speaking to reporters at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, Mevani said, "Some Godse devotees sitting in the PMO got two FIRs lodged against me because of a tweet while there are more serious cases in the country. This shows their intention."
