On August 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi government revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and statehood, dividing it into two union territories. In this series – ‘One Year in a Disappeared State’ – The Wire will look at what the last year has meant and what the region looks like now.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a Ram Mandir to be built in Ayodhya, where the Babri Masjid once stood. The Supreme Court, while resolving the decades-old land dispute last year, cleared the way for the temple's construction. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat were also present at the bhoomi pujan ceremony.
On the other hand, on the same day last year, August 5, 2019, the Central Government read down Article 370 of the constitution. Jammu and Kashmir was also divided into two union territories.
