The process of nomination for the block chief election in Uttar Pradesh, which completed on July 8, is being discussed all over the country. Several incidents of misbehaviour and alleged violence have come to the fore in many places.
In Lakhimpur Kheri, a Samajwadi Party candidate was allegedly manhandled by BJP workers, after which six policemen were suspended with the administration ordering a magisterial probe. A woman block development council member’s saree was also pulled in front of police officers.
Such incidents raise concerns over the role of the police system in the state, especially when Uttar Pradesh is ready for assembly elections in 2022.
