The Indian government is trying to amend the constitution in a big way. The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill, 2025, proposed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, if passed, will give governors and LGs unprecedented power to remove ministers and chief ministers.

It also allows the president to sack the prime minister – though we know that chances of a sitting prime minister being arrested by central agencies they control are close to zero. It says if the prime minister, chief ministers, or ministers are arrested and detained continuously for 30 days on charges attracting a jail term of five years or more, the president, governors, and LGs can remove them, regardless of whether or not they are convicted.

In case the order doesn’t go through on time, they will automatically cease to remain in their position. The president or governor will remove them on the advice of the prime minister or the chief minister. Now, it's being hailed by some admirers as echoing PM Modi’s 'Naa Khaunga Naa Khane dunga' resolve – but there are serious dangers ahead.
