New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Sunday questioned that why the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was using its machinery in “political battles.”

A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran made the remarks as the apex court on Tuesday (November 18) refused to consider a plea by the CBI seeking the court’s approval to start a preliminary inquiry into the allegations of irregularities in appointments and promotions in Jharkhand Assembly Secretariat, reported Deccan Herald.

“Why do you use the machinery for your political battles? We have told you so many times," asked the bench.

Earlier in November last year, the Supreme Court had put on hold a verdict of the Jharkhand high court September 23, 2024, wherein it had directed the CBI to inquire into the alleged irregularities in appointments and promotions in the Jharkhand state assembly.

After considering the matter, the Supreme Court said that it is not keen to entertain the CBI’s plea.

Appearing for Jharkhand assembly secretariat, senior advocate Kapil Sibal said that it is shocking that when matters come up, the CBI appears in that court beforehand.

While additional solicitor general S.V. Raju who was representing the CBI disagreed and contended that the CBI appears when there is an offence, the bench was not convinced, said the DH report.
