New Delhi: Even as international organisations express concerns about the 19 lakh people excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, other states in India are expressing willingness to replicate the process. Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday announced that the state would like to implement the process, echoing sentiments expressed by Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh earlier this week.

"We will implement NRC in Haryana," Khattar told reporters in Panchkula after meeting Justice H.S. Bhalla (retired) and former Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba at their residences in Chandigarh. Khattar met the two individuals as part of his party's "Maha Sampark Abhiyan" ahead of the state's assembly polls in October. He had previously supported the implementation of NRC across the country.

He said Justice Bhalla has taken up many assignments after his retirement. "He is also working on the NRC and will visit Assam soon. I said that we will implement NRC in Haryana and have sought his support and suggestions," he said.

This is contrary to the line that the BJP has taken about the NRC within Assam, where it has expressed dissastisfaction over 'genuine citizens' being left out. However, the party's leaders have sought the process to be replicated in other states.

On Sunday, Khattar also said the Haryana government will look into the feasibility of setting up a Law Commission. "He (Justice Bhalla) suggested that a Law Commission should be set up in Haryana. The government will look into the feasibility of setting up of this commission," Khattar said.
