New Delhi: The Income Tax department on Friday, February 25, conducted searches at the premises of Shiv Sena corporator Yashwant Jadhav in Mumbai on charges of tax evasion.
A team of tax department officials visited Jadhav, who is also the chairman of the BMC standing committee, early on Friday and have been continuing the searches through the day.
Yashwant’s wife is Shiv Sena MLA Yamini Jadhav. Premises associated with BMC contractors and the Jadhavs’ close aides are being raided as well, The Hindu has reported.
Elections to the Brihanmumbai Corporation, Mumbai’s powerful civic body, are slated in a month.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya has alleged that Jadhav and his relatives are involved in money laundering and siphoned off BMC funds.
Shiv Sena is one third of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which also consists of Congress and Nationalist Congress Party.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), on February 23, arrested the Maharashtra state minorities and skill development minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik following several hours of questioning. He was sent to ED custody until March 3.
