New Delhi: Drugmaker Abbott India has voluntarily recalled several batches of the popular antacid Digene Gel after the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) issued an advisory against using the product.
DCGI had asked people not to consume the product as it may be unsafe, and also told people to report any adverse effects they may witness.
“Patients to discontinue Digene Gel which are manufactured at Goa facility,” the DGCI said. The drug authority had also asked chemists and wholesalers to stop selling the product.
DCGI looked into the product after receiving a complaint on August 9, stating that a bitter taste and pungent smell was coming from the antacid, Mint reported.
“Abbott in India has voluntarily recalled Digene Gel antacid medicine manufactured at our Goa site, due to isolated customer complaints on taste and odour. There have been no reports of patient health concerns. Other forms of Digene, such as tablets and stick packs are not impacted and Digene Gel manufactured at our other production site is not affected and continues to be available in sufficient quantities to meet current demand,” an Abbott spokesperson told Mint about the company’s decision.
