New Delhi: While many countries have sent medical equipment to help India's fight against the second wave of COVID-19, Kenya on Friday revealed that it had decided to express solidarity in a unique way. The country handed over 12 tonnes of Kenyan tea, coffee and groudnuts, which is specifically meant to provide a 'refreshing break' to frontline workers who are helping COVID-19 patients.

In a note issued on Friday, the East African country said that it had taken note that some countries had expressed solidarity with India by donating medical equipment, oxygen and other essentials. "Kenya, however, identified the special group - frontline health care givers. These heroes/heroines are undertaking a noble duty of serving COVID-19 patients for very long hours or even days without any break," the statement says.

For this reason, the government of Kenya put together this package – six tonnes of tea, three tonnes of coffee and three tonnes of groundnuts – for healthcare workers to "take a refreshing break with a cup of Kenyan tea or coffee".

Ambassador Willy Bett handed over the package of humanitarian aid from the Government of Kenya to the Government of India, which was received in Mumbai by Homi Khusrokhan, vice chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society's Maharashtra Branch.

Khusrokhan expressed gratitude and thanked the government of Kenya for this gesture.
