New Delhi: Two fires in two different cities in north and west India have led to casualties – many of whom are children.

A massive fire in a children's hospital in East Delhi has led to the death of seven newborn babies. Earlier on the same day, a fire at Gujarat's Rajkot killed as many as 33 people, nine of whom are children.

The news agency PTI has quoted officials of the Delhi Fire Services and reported that the incident took place late on May 25 at the Baby Care New Born Hospital in Shahdara and the building beside it.

"Twelve newborns were rescued from the medical facility, but seven of them died," Services chief Atul Garg was quoted as having said. Six of them were declared 'brought dead' and one died in the course of receiving treatment.

Five are undergoing treatment.

Police, according to PTI, have initiated action against the owner of the hospital – one Naveen Kichi.

Rajkot

The fire at the TRP game zone in Rajkot broke out earlier on Saturday, at around 5 pm. The fibre dome of the game zone erupted in flames.

Children – nine of whom have died – had gone there in large numbers because it was their summer vacation.

The Hindu has reported that the Gujarat government has constituted a probe team to ascertain whether the game zone had the necessary licences from the authorities.

The chief minister has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the fire.
