Patient Undergoing Treatment at GTB Hospital Dies Hours After Ceiling Fan Detaches and Falls on Him

New Delhi: A patient undergoing treatment at the emergency ward of the Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) hospital in New Delhi died hours after a ceiling fan fell on him, reported Hindustan Times.

The deceased, identified as MD Akbar, 42, was admitted to the emergency department of the GTB hospital on July 18 by his brother and was undergoing treatment for hypertension, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia.

As a nursing officer was administering treatment to Akbar in the emergency ward on Saturday (July 18) night, a ceiling fan detached and allegedly fell on him.

"The fan fell directly onto the patient's bed while treatment was being administered. The nursing officer attending to him also sustained injuries in the incident," HT quoted a hospital staff member aware of the developments as saying.

The hospital staff said that both the patient and the nursing officer suffered injuries.

As per Akbar’s death certificate, he died around 12.16 am, less than three hours after the incident. The death certificate records the cause of death as hypertension, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia.

The newspaper cited hospital staff who informed that the family members of Akbar had gathered at the GTB hospital on Sunday (July 19) morning and raised their concerns surrounding the incident.

A response from GTB Hospital is pending, said the HT report.
