New Delhi: Manipur is batting multiple crises, with an outbreak of dengue and African Swine Fever (AFS) reported even as ethnic clashes are ongoing. According to the Economic Times, five people are suspected to have died due to dengue and there were 1,338 cases registered as of October 13 – the highest infections the state has reported in recent times.

According to the report, this year's tally is nearly three times the cases that were reported in 2022 and five times the tally in 2021.

The state's health directorate released a status report of confirmed dengue cases and deaths from January 1 to October 13, 2023. While dengue's morbidity rate is zero as of now, five suspected dengue-related deaths were recorded.

Imphal West was the worst-hit district with 898 cases, including 3 suspected deaths, according to ET.

Meanwhile, the state's veterinary and animal husbandry department confirmed the outbreak of AFS in the state, declaring the pig farm of the Central Agriculture University (CAU) in Imphal West as the epicentre. The outbreak comes after pig farmers' bodies reported deaths of pigs in valley districts with symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, starvation, and death within a week.
