Over 16,000 Pigs Culled in Mizoram Since January Amid African Swine Fever Outbreak

New Delhi: Swine deaths due to the African Swine Fever (ASF) have reached 8,719 in Mizoram as on August 4. Thirty-four fresh cases of swine deaths were reported while 59 more pigs were culled on August 4.
The state has culled a total of 16,158 pigs since January 2024 to deal with the ASF outbreak, reported India Today North East.
Recently, the Lunglei district reported 24 fresh cases of swine deaths and 15 pigs had to be culled. The Hnahthial district culled 29 pigs after seven deaths were reported while the Aizawl district witnessed three deaths and the culling of nine pigs.
According to the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, 200 villages across the state has been affected by the ASF, which has led to thousands of pigs being culled.
The ASF outbreak has been persistent since 2021, with the disease thriving in warm Monsoon conditions.
As a result of the ASF outbreak, teams of government officials have been conducting regular inspections to detect those animals which are affected and need to be culled to prevent the further spread of the disease.
Official government records reveal that while 33,417 pigs died from ASF in 2021, the figure was 12,795 in 2022 and 1,039 in 2023 reported India Today North East.
