New Delhi: Thirty four people have died after consuming spurious liquor in the Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu on June 18.

The Hindu has reported that most of the victims drank the liquor at the Karunapuram village. They died on the night of June 19.

Two women and a transperson are among those who died. More than 60 people are undergoing treatment at various hospitals across Kallakurichi, Salem, and Puducherry. Indian Express has it that 100 people are in hospitals, of whom five are critical.

Many may have died without having made it to the hospital too, sources told The Hindu.

The Madras high court division bench of Justices D. Krishnakumar and K. Kumaresh Babu has agreed to hear an urgent plea on the matter tomorrow, June 21.

“I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths,” chief minister M.K. Stalin has said, adding that those involved have been arrested.

“Immediate action will be taken if the public informs” about such matters, he said, according to Times of India.

Opposition parties Bharatiya Janata Party and the AIADMK have been vocal about the case.
