On September 3, India became the first country to record over 80,000 new cases in a single day.
It is also important to remember that experts and many epidemiologists, some of whom have been interviewed by The Wire, have said that these are just officially recorded numbers and the daily increase in the total caseload could be much greater.
The states which are contributing the most to the daily increase in the total caseload are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
Over 17,000 new cases were recorded in Maharashtra on September 3, following around 10,000 new cases in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and over 5,000 new cases in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
In terms of daily deaths, India is recording over 1,000 deaths every day now. According to an analysis in the Indian Express, over 1,000 deaths could become the new normal.
