The number of new COVID-19 cases stood at 1,32,788 as on June 1. Continuing with the declining trend of positivity rate, the nationwide positivity rate stood at 6.57%. As many as 3,207 people succumbed to COVID-19 on June 1 in the country.
In other news, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) told Supreme Court that a total of 9,346 children were abandoned, orphaned or lost a parent to COVID-19 by May 29, 2021.
Meanwhile, amidst the raging pandemic, an ambulance scam has emerged in Bihar. In the state's Siwan district, seven ambulances – purchased last year during the country's peak COVID-19 crisis allegedly at three times the price – remain unused at a parking lot. The "ambulance scam" was unearthed after reports showed each vehicle, costing Rs 7 lakh, was purchased for a whopping Rs 21.84 lakh.
