India now is at par with Brazil which has the second-highest caseload of coronavirus infections in the world after the United States. The country added almost 87,000 cases in a single day. On September 5, the total number of coronavirus infections in India crossed 40 lakh or 4 million. Over 1,000 new deaths were reported and the total death toll is nearing 70,000. At present, India has 8,46,395 active cases and as many as 31,07,223 people have recovered. Globally, the novel coronavirus has infected 26,521,304 people and claimed the lives of 873,131 people so far.
The daily increase in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh is the highest at present. In Maharashtra, in the last two weeks, the number of cases has almost doubled. An analysis in The Indian Express shows that a sudden increase in daily cases in Maharashtra can be attributed to the fact that testing has increased.
