The Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti’s (GSDS) Hindi language magazine, Antim Jan, featured V.D. Savarkar on the cover. The Hindutva ideologue was an accused in the murder of Mahatma Gandhi, but was acquitted because of a lack of corroborative evidence against him. The Wire speaks to historian and journalist Dhirendra K. Jha, who explains why it is extremely inappropriate to celebrate Savarkar. He also explains why Savarkar cannot be seen in the same light as freedom fighters like Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
