In a hostile climate for comedians and satirists, Akash Banerjee has managed to carve out a niche for himself. His show 'The Deshbhakt', which makes fun of politicians, the media and even the judiciary, has a large following on social media platforms.
“Its quite tragic that as the largest democracy, we don’t have a proper satire show. But if we did American-style satire, we would be in jail,” Bannerjee says in this year-ender podcast with Sidharth Bhatia.
He says that the number of taboo subjects has only increased even in the last three years. “There are a lot of Holy Cows” that comedians do not touch, he says.
He also lists some of the highlights of 2021 that gave him a lot of fodder – “this year has completely exposed the godi media”.
