New Delhi: Over 6,000 post graduates, around 40,000 graduates and 1.2 lakh candidates who have studied up to class 12 have applied for the position of sweeper in Haryana.

The contractual job profile for the position is to clean offices of government departments, boards, corporations and civic bodies, reported The Times of India.

Among them are Manish Kumar, a postgraduate with a diploma in business studies, and his wife Roopa, a qualified teacher.

“Even in private schools or companies, we barely get Rs 10,000 a month. Here, there’s a glimmer of hope for regular employment for future. Plus, sweeping isn’t a full-day job, so we ca pursue other work during the day,” Kumar told The Times of India.

Many among the applicants have applied for the position of sweeper after being unsuccessful in getting selected for other government jobs.

The high qualifications of the applicants reflect the massive demand for employment, specifically in the government sector and corresponding lack of jobs.

The Congress in poll-bound Haryana has attacked the ruling BJP over the development, accusing the saffron party of failing to address the unemployment situation in the state, reported The Times of India.
