New Delhi: A multi-storey building collapsed in Surat on Saturday (July 6), resulting in the deaths of seven people while some others are feared to be trapped. Most families that resided in the building were factory labourers, said officials. Surat is known to be a hub of migrant workers.
The incident took place in Sachin area of Surat amid heavy rains that have continued since the last several days, reported Hindustan Times.
One woman was rescued soon after the collapse and by Saturday night, bodies of three other persons were pulled out from the debris, said officials.
Teams of the state police, state disaster response force (SDRF) and national disaster response force (NDRF) are carrying out the rescue operations.
Several textile workers and their families were staying in the multi-storey building, reported The Indian Express.
According to Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Gehlot, around five among the 30 flats in the building were occupied, with most of the occupants being labourers working in nearby factories.
Most of the labourers were from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, said officials.
The first body that was recovered from the debris was that of a 25-year-old man. The woman who has been rescued has been identified as Kashish Sharma (23). She was rushed to New Civil Hospital, where her condition is stable, reported The Indian Express.
